Connecting Echo Dot and computer to same speakers

I'm in a classroom and I connected my Dot and computer to an external speaker via a splitter. The audio from my computer is inaudible when the Dot is connected. However, once I disconnect the Dot, the audio returns to normal. Any suggestions?
