I have an LG 55UH6550 UHD wi-fi TV that is internet connected and running through a wireless router. Can Alexa control this TV without additional hardware? If so, how?

No, it cannot.  You need something like the Logitech Harmony Hub to act as an intermediary between Alexa and your TV (and/or your cable/satellite box, DVD player, et al....if you have any of those).
