Amazon Echo Discussion / Re: Can Alexa Turn On Lights for x Amt of Time?
« Last post by Grandpa Techie on March 20, 2020, 06:18:25 pm »
I used an Alexa Routine to have my Amazon Smart Plug turn ON the heat in my chair (same as a light) for a fixed amount of time.  (The chair heat plugs into an electrical outlet, so I inserted the Amazon Smart Plug between the chair heat plug and the electrical outlet.)

After setting up your Amazon Smart Plug, I renamed the smart plug to something meaningful.  In my case I renamed it “Chair Plugs”.  Then I changed the Amazon Smart Plug to Type = Light.

To create a Routine, I went to the Alexa App main menu and selected ”Routines” then selected the “+” in the top right of the screen.

My routine is as follows:

ROUTINE NAME: “Turn on my chair heat for 30 minutes”
WHEN THIS HAPPENS: “Alexa, turn on chair heat”
Add action:
Select:
1) Smart Home, Lights, Chair Plug, Next, Power: On
2) Alexa Say, “Chair heat has been turned on”
3) Wait, Duration is 30 minutes
4) Smart Home, Lights, Chair Plug, Next, Power: Power: Off
5) Alexa Say “Chair heat has been turned off”

If you are turning on anything other than light, I would suggest testing your routine with a light connected to your Amazon Smart Plug.  This same routine will probably work with any brand of smart plugs.

Hi, I just figured out a way to do what you're asking about that seems to work. I suggest reading through everything before doing any of the steps - hopefully they'll make sense!

Thanks you very much for taking the time to outline this.   This helped me out quite a bit to get started but my circumstance was a bit different as I didn't have access to phones and email accounts.  Here is how I set mine up given the circumstances.

Hope this helps others!

they should have purchase the wyze cam and get the show free  :-)  I already have too many shows.  one for each room.  all of my dots are gathering dust in a drawer.

I just add more Echo products to the room... multiple echos makes it easier to get one to hear you in some instances and then other times 4 of them hear me... but only one responds and it's normally (if not always) the one nearest me when I speak the wake word.
Get those dots out and use them or gift them to someone... make them work for somebody.

the dots are backups.   One might be going outside to a shed, but not sure.  las far as multi echo devices in a room, basically I ran out of outlets and have too many surge protectors or I would do it.

When I ask alexa "Alexa is the garage door closed"  it answers with "garage door is closed garage door is closed"

I simply can figure it out.  The garage door sensor uses the Smart Life application.

Echo Technical Support / Re: Can't set volume level with voice
« Last post by renegade600 on March 20, 2020, 04:21:37 am »
One of my many Echo Show 5'S started to ignore my volume commands. I would say, "Alexa volume 6" and it would ignore the command. Unplugged and replugged, no difference. I ended up doing a factorY reset and it started working correctly again.

the opposite happened to me.  was having trouble with my kitchen lights and deleted the kitchen bulb but I was not paying attention and accidentally deleted the kitchen show.   too many devices named kitchen.   Now alexa will not respond to some commands after the reset.

You remember when the Show first came out and many people were saying that nobody wants a screen because Alexa is voice enabled. I said that myself. Turns out, I like the screen! :)

you are right, it really did not make sense at first to have a screen.  they really seemed useless.
