Title: Consecutive Commands
Post by: jpainter01 on August 06, 2019, 05:40:35 pm
Where do you set something that makes Alexa accept consecutive commands without repeating the wake word? i.e. adding multiple items to a shopping list.

It's called "follow up" mode.

It's called "follow up" mode.
May I add that it is located in the Settings of each of your Echo device.

I'd add that some of my devices don't work with follow-up mode. My dots do not. My 8" show does but only if both command beginning and ending sounds are enabled. Very irritating.

I am a newbie. I have a tall echo and 3 dots (2 2nd gen, 1 3rd gen, and 1 4gen). Recently when I asked either to play a particular type of music, for instance classic country, she will only play 2 or 3 songs and stop. This just started.....what's going on? And how do I return to continual play mode?

I don't specify any service, I just ask her to play a certain type of music.

You do not need follow up mode for your example. I don't use it. In your case I ask alexa to add corn, ketchup and oatmeal to my grocery list. Additionally there is a short window of time that you can add additional items if your list name is not shopping list. Not sure of the exact amount of time but I can say alexa, add (item) to grocery as long as the list is still displayed on the show8 screen. If you are using the actual name "shopping list" you do not need to specify the list name, just say add (item).
Also without follow up mode you can ask for 2 requests. I believe it's called string of commands. Example: Alexa, turn off lights and play my playlist or turn off family room fan and turn on the heat.

Follow up mode is device specific. It must be turned on/off device by device.

I don't specify any service, I just ask her to play a certain type of music.

Amazon Music is the default music streaming service.  Try the command, "shuffle ALL xyx songs on Amazon Music", or "play a xyz station on Amazon Music".

Alexa is giving you a sample only.
