Smart Devices and Gadgets / Re: ring is starting to get on my last nerve - rant

I've replaced everything Ring (except one doorbell) with Reolink NVR system. My own 8TB storage, recording 24 hours a day (not just when there's motion), no subscription fee.

Smart Devices and Gadgets / ring is starting to get on my last nerve - rant
« Last post by renegade600 on July 12, 2024, 11:54:37 am »
I am about to replace the ring cameras with another brand.   Lately, I have been losing, on the average, one camera a month to "this device is offline" errors.   Once it gets the error, it will not connect again, no matter what I do.   Call customer service, they just want to sell me a new one at a discount.    If I did not know better, I would think ring was sending updates to break them.   I like ring because of the integration with alexa and I really hate replacing all the cameras and the alarm system but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The reviews I've seen on YouTube and elsewhere online seem generally positive. The discounted Prime member price looks like a good deal.

the new release is supposed to have better sound, better choice of colors, no video just animation, no camera.   Maybe it won't have the flicker issues.    Priced at 80 bucks, though it is already on sale for prime members.

anyone interested ;-)

I have one of the original Spot units... I've never had ANY problem with it. No flicker or anything else. (Well... none that weren't my fault in set up or other)... Still works great today.

Amazon Echo Discussion / Re: Astro for business already discontinued
« Last post by jwlv on July 05, 2024, 04:41:58 am »
Astro was an overprice Echo Show on wheels from the start. And it still is.

Disabling it completely seems rather harsh. I guess there were so few business customers that Amazon doesn't even care about being sued for a couple thousand dollars.

Switched my wifi to TP-Link 3 Deco mesh system and discovered random connection switching of my devices  to different Deco in the 1 story home. This may contribute to the behavior you observe. I took the path of assigning devices that are stationary to the respective Deco device and disabled the automatic optimization for those.

Amazon retires its Astro for Business security robot after only 7 months.  Over 2k down the drain by those businesses that purchased it.    But amazon will be refunding 300 bucks plus unused subscription fees.  What a ripoff!   Wonder when the home version will be discontinued.
