Title: Creating group in Alexa app
Post by: Neverett on January 15, 2018, 03:31:45 pm
I’m hoping someone can assist with the problem I’m having creating a Group in Alexa app. Here’s the situation…

I have two Wemo plugs connected to two separate lamps within a bedroom.  Alexa recognizes them both. By this I mean I can say “Alexa, turn on Jim‘s lamp“ and it turns it on. Same for the second lamp.

I then tried to create a Group with the two lamps so that I could say, “Alexa turn on bedroom” and in a single command, both lamps would turn on.

Here’s where I encountered the problem. No matter what I do, Alexa does not recognize my vocal commands for  the group name. It’s a straightforward process to add the two devices to the group in the app,  so I’m not sure where I went wrong.  Additionally, when I go into the Bedroom Group in the Alexa app, I can use the button to turn on and off BOTH lamps at once.  And yet, while it works here, I cannot get voice recognition on Alexa to “turn on bedroom”.

Any thoughts on what I’ve done wrong?

BTW, I have a second Alexa device in another room. I don’t think that relates to this problem, but I thought I would mention it.

I have same kind of setup for two TP smart plugs in living room.  One plug controls two lamps and another controls one lamp.  The switches named One Lamp and Two Lamps are setup and controlled by TP app Kasa.  The group we set up to control both switches were done with Alexa group.  All that was needed was to includ One Lamp and Two Lamps into a group called Living Room.  We can say turn off/om living room.  Even just saying living room off/on works.

Maybe your Wemo switches/app haven't the capability of the TP Links?

This does work with Wemo switches, I have several in groups and they work fine. Just a thought, any chance you have something else in your house named bedroom, maybe a thermostat or tv? Wondering if Alexa is confused about which to turn on.

I also have WEMO switches and have several in groups.  So, this does work. In the beginning you did not need the WEMO skill to control WEMO in Alexa but it is now needed.  I found this out after I installed two WEMO dimmers.  I encountered a similar problem where Alexa could not control the devices as well as a series of other problems.  I have a Plume pod network and I had to reboot the network and then things started to work.  Plume support said that I needed to assign static IP addresses to the WEMO devices.  I have done that (it was pretty easy) and so far no problems.  So a reboot of your router might be something to try and if that fixes it, maybe assigning static IP addresses.  I feel your pain as I messed with this for several days, but it does work.

Help... I'm not trying to sidetrack this thread but the only thing I can do on this web site is post comments.
How do I, why can't I, start a new thread?

Click the forum category (e.g. Amazon Echo Discussion, Echo Across the Pond (Europe), Echo Tips & Tricks) then click the grayish-blue "New Topic" button button.

I can't figure out how to post a screenshot, but I don't have the referenced radio button.
Not sure what's going on...

If you are reading this message right now, you will not see the "New Topic" button. You need to be on the top level of the forum categories. This is a sub-level thread, which means you can only post replies. New topics can only go on the top level.
