Title: TP Link and WEMO switchs offline

So several of each of these smart plugs hooked up to lights. Generally work fine , then they go offline all of them at the same time.. Echo says "Not responding". I tried a bunch of things and last .. which works is I sign onto my home router and reset the 2.4 and 5 GHZ wifi .. and bang .. all the switches are back online.

Any idea why or how to avoid this?

You might want to check if there is a sleep/standby mode on your router. You may also want to check the lease time on DHCP. Does your other network devices go offline? Just a suggestion hope it helps.
