The other day someone in my house was having trouble accessing the Internet and asked me if the Internet was down. Rather than going to my office and using the computer, I just said "Alexa, how are you feeling?" She replied that she was great and ready to answer questions. If she had no Internet connection, the light ring would have glowed red and she would have replied "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble understanding you right now."

I've done this too, except I said, "Alexa, time?" If my internet connection is good, then Alexa would tell me the time.

Sorry but that is not right anymore. It stopped being right with an update about 2 weeks ago. Alexa has a buffer and can respond to common commands for 10ish minutes with no internet connection now. To check for internet connection you have to ask for something like tune-in that she would not store locally. She may act like she will play it but no sound will come out.
The light at the base near the power cord does not even start flashing amber until the buffer is flushed.
Edited because apparently last night was an odd fluke.

Still not sure. Further testing needs to be done.

I did exactly what he did and it worked for me. I asked what time it was. She replied she was having trouble connecting to the internet. When we were back up and running, I inquired again.

The little LED next to power wire will flash red when internet is down.

I just ask Alexa if she is connected to the Internet. ;)

This last question may be the best, but just because the Echo has a good connection does not mean other wireless devices do!
