Check your skills
« on: November 01, 2024, 02:35:20 pm »
I was going over the skills in the alexa app and found a skill that was added without permission.   It was called JHCP Prod and it is an ambient advertising app that shows ads on the homescreen.

Might want to check your skill list to see if it's been added.

Thank you for that. It hadn;t crossed my mind that the ads were a Skill... This is why we have trust issues. I;ve been hunting the setting that was allowing the ads, this should take care of it. And now I have awareness that those Skills can be auto added somehow. I had no idea.

Again thanks.

THX for the tip. I had similar adds showing up suddenly on my echo show when just scrolling my favorite photos on the home screen. I found 3 additional skills that I hadn't added myself. This is becoming really a nuisance and let me regret to even have bothered to add the show unit for my doorbell. (As I meanwhile discovered, the latency is so bad and my dog is my more effective announcer of people not even have gotten into the courtyard yet.)

I agree, it is a nuisance.   Just an additional place to check after home content on the show and the different settings in the app.   Wonder what will be next.

I finally figured out the origin of scattered ads during my viewing of photos on my Echo show 5. The ads are labeled as sponsored in the bottom right corner. There is also an "i" next to it which gives access to an option menu where you can stop that particular one. So Amazon forces us to manually go on each "sponsored" page to deactivate it. Since most people  like me will not readily noticed the option and hence become an ad subscriber without intention.

It don't help.   When the ads first appeared, I was constantly clicking on the i to try to stop them, did not work.   I believe all it did was let amazon know when you were around so they can target you better.

For me, once I touch the screen in the bottom right corner a window opens and let me make a choice to deselect the sponsor for future display. It seems to work for me and doesn't replay the particular ad as far as I can tell. Another observation, amazon recognized when a person enters the room or lights are turned on and started the photo session with the same ad always until I deselected it. I am just waiting for new ads to show up.

It didn't take Amazon long to come up with new ads. This just a game being played with us users. No way to escape other than shutting features down that start getting me in bad mood. Time to look for alternatives under my control.
