Alexa won't respond when playing music

I just got an Echo Dot. When I tell Alexa to play music then try to interrupt by saying "Alexa" she ignores me. The only way I can get her to respond is to pause the music on my phone. How do I fix this?

Keep the volume of the dot at a lower level!

that is why I use bluetooth and have the speaker across the room. it is not that alexa ignores you, it is just that it cannot hear all the time when music is too loud.
