Echo Show - How can I turn off the Things To Try messages?
« on: December 01, 2018, 01:25:08 pm »
Hi,

I apologize as I'm sure this question has already been asked, but the words are so generic (try, show, etc.) that my forum search returns a ton of unrelated posts.

I just picked up an Echo Show on Black Friday, and while I like most of what I've seen so far. The constant Try Alexa nag at the bottom of the screen is incredibly annoying.

I've searched online for how to turn this off. The most relevant suggestions (on the Echo Show page on Amazon) says to go into the Alexa app, Settings - Notifications - Things To Try and turn off Alexa Device Notifications. I've done that, but the Show still displays the messages, rotating them periodically.

Does anyone know why this did not work, or have any other suggestions on how to turn this off?

Thanks for your help!

Laurel

We have 2 older and 2 new Echo Shows.  There is no way to turn off the "try" at the bottom of the screen.  It has annoyed people since day one.  https://forums.developer.amazon.com/questions/96958/how-to-turn-of-or-deactivate-the-try-message-at-ec.html?page=1&pageSize=10&sort=votes

I'd read the complaints about this. One of the reasons I finally purchased one was two recent questions answered on the purchase page. Both said the feature could be turned off with the setting change in the Alexa app. If that setting doesn't turn this off, what purpose does it serve - none I'm guessing.

I've seen posts on the Echo Spot that say you can at least stop it from constantly rotating the Things to Try. Does the Show have anything like that?

This is super annoying. It's like purchasing a 4k TV because one of it's "features" is constantly scrolling advertisements at the bottom of the screen. Why would anyone want that? Amazon sends me a weekly email about what's new with Alexa and new things to try. That is plenty!

I can return it through the end of January. I need more time to work with it, but this is definitely a big negative in my view.

Thanks again for the help!

Well, I just spent some time in a chat with a couple of Amazon representatives. The initial representative researched the issue and said it could not be turned off. I told him that may figure into my keeping the Show or returning it. He then got a "specialist" on the chat who reconfirmed that it can not be turned off. He also checked the Settings - Notifications - Things to Try setting and said that is just for shopping recommendations. Both representatives said they would make note of my feedback.

Perhaps we can get this option added if enough people contact them directly. Might be worth a shot.

We were able to turn off all the stuff coming past on the screen itself so we are happy.  I don't really notice the little "try sentence" any longer. I believe the motto of many on the forum is to send feed back if you don't like a feature, and eventually they will change it if it doesn't cut into their profits too badly.

The inability to control the display of the Try messages has been an issue forever and obviously developers are just ignoring the request to give the users control!  I am new to using the Alexa app and the Show devices, and I really like them except for the fact that there is not enough control for the user.  The developers keep pushing their agenda like the Try messages and the constant attempt to access all contacts.  Wish they would change!
