Alexa Group, cannot create with same name as a light
« on: October 31, 2017, 05:53:05 pm »
I have a few Alexa Dots and Hive, with thermostat and a few lights.

If I name one of my lights Front Room in Hive and then Add Device in Alexa
I then can't create a Groups called Front Room.

If I have an Echo named Playroom, I can create a Group called Playroom.

Interesting (or not).

How would Alexa know which to perform?
Think of Alexa as a child
You must be specific with naming things to avoid confusion As Alexa grows she will not allow you to confuse her with a name already used for something else.

If you plan to use them only as a group give each individual an unassuming name.  For instance I have 2 seperate switches that make up my hall lights.  I named them H1 and H2, then created a group called Hall Lights that turns them both on or off.

my first attempt at groups i did so with the lights and one plug in the kitchen or so i thought. dummy me i duplicated names. the first time i attempted to turn one on, everything came on. my family had no idea what i was doing, didn't hurt that it happened to be on Halloween. kids thought the place was haunted, had to laugh, then fix the names and group setup. since i am very careful to select unique easy to remember names.
