Accessing shopping list offline
« on: September 20, 2017, 06:17:25 am »
Hi,

Although Amazon say that folk can access the shopping list offline, when I tried to use it in my local store it came up with a 'no network available. Please connect and try again' message.

Has anyone got any ideas how to make this feature work?

Cheers

Chris

This is definitely a new feature. I actually just turned off my WiFi and open Alexa app. It did show me the option to open my list.

Maybe try to update your Alexa app.

I've always been able to access my shopping list while at the store with no wifi.

I just use ifttt to have the shopping list email to me prior to going to the store.   unfortunately not all stores are wifi or mobile phone friendly - too much interference.

It would be nice if amazon would have widgets for the shopping list.

To OP:

This is not a new feature; it has been there since the beginning.  If your phone works like most, if wi-fi is not available for any reason, the phone switches to use cell data.  If you are in a big store, even cell data may not even work, and that is why the no network message appeared.

This is not the app's fault. because you cannot get a wi-fi or cell radio signal if there is not one, or it is blocked by large structures like buildings, mountains and such. No internet access, then it's  no go.

Folks, the shopping list is available with NO wifi and NO mobile data.
If wifi and mobile data are OFF and you open the Alexa app/list, you'll get
the following message...

"the Alexa app is offline.  You can still use your lists, but changes won't synchronize
until you reopen the app once you're back online."

If you don't see your list, go to the menu icon in the upper left corner,
tap and then tap List.  It works for me.  Turn off wifi and mobile data and give it a try.

It has worked this way for as long as I've had my Dots (Christmas of last year).

Yes, but . . .
With the Alexa app off, I turned off wi-fi and cell data for phone.  Then turned on Alexa app.  No go; app did not boot on.  I then turned on wi-fi, turned on Alexa app, and then turned off wi-fi again after app was running.  Then the app worked as you described,

So, the Alexa app must be on, and if wi-fi and cell signal are not present it works as you say.

It does work as I said Mike. I just tried it again. closed the app, shut down WiFi and mobile data. Open the app. Clicked on the menu and it told me that I'm offline but could still access my list.  Click on the menu again and list and there it was. You just aren't holding your mouth right  ;D

Closing an app is not same as minimizing it.  On iPhone, to close an app it has to be dragged up and off the screen  This completely shuts down an app,  That is what I meant when I said app was off; its not minimized (running in background) -- it is completely dead.

I have no idea how to completely shut down an app on Android phone.

On my Galaxy S7 I can tap the Recent key to close all apps.  All apps  close at once.  It is the close all option. Not minimize.   Still works.  Don't know what more to say other than maybe it's an Android thing.

Interesting. At any rate, we both know how to access shopping list on our phones when not connected to radio signals. Thanks for bringing it up.
Later, Gater.

NOT TRUE.  sometimes it will take forever getting to the list.  It has happened to me a few times when I forget to get my list email.    the spinner just spins and spins and spins and spins and spins and spins until you say heck with it.   if it has never happened to you then you are lucky.

I've just tested this on Android by swiping the Alexa app away, turning in airplane mode, and restarting the app. The app displays a message saying "No network connection available. Please connect and try again." Tapping OK causes the app to close. I don't know if it has always done this or if this is new.

I want to copy what you did but I don't know how to "swipe the Alexa app away".
When my Alexa app is closed (not minimized) and wifi and mobile data are off (or
on for that matter), this is the first screen that opens when I open the Alexa app.

I tap the menu in the upper left corner to access the menu, tap list and see this

Tap the menu again (since is SAYS I can still use my list) and tap list and see this

As the app says, changes won't sync until you reopen the app once you're back online.  So if you're added to the list and not opened it while online, you won't have your most up to date list...but that's not what's in question here.
