If you are going to buy an Amazon Echo, Tap, or Dot or other Amazon device used (on eBay, CraigsList, ShopGoodwill.com, or elsewhere), you have to make sure that the person who owned it before you deregistered it from their Amazon account.
The previous owner must Deregister the Echo device through the App because if they don't, you will not be able to register it to your Amazon account and will not be able to use it. Apparently Amazon can't (or won't) do anything on their end because they have no idea if the Echo is stolen property or not.
If you have no way of contacting the person who previously owned it before you commit to buying it, I would not consider buying it.
I just wanted to save someone a lot of headaches and disappointment if they buy a used Echo and find out it's already been registered to someone else and can't get the previous owner to deregister it.
