From reviews the TP-Link HS100 Smart plug looks like an excellent product to work with Echo, however the UK plug version is out of stock from all suppliers as far as I can see.
Has demand overwhelmed them, and is there a good alternative at a competitive price?

Yes, look for the upgraded version that is smaller (TP-LINK HS105 Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini) and does not block the other outlet like the HS100 does. It costs $10 more and is also in short supply.

Thanks Mike, I wasn't aware of this new model.
However due to the large size of UK plugs I suspect there won't ever be a UK version.

I expect CES 2017 will see a new generation of smart home products like this:

Not an Apple iOS issue for the TP Link smart plug, thank goodness. I prefer to turn if off and on via Alexa; it happens a little quicker. Two new model mini smart plugs are coming to us from Newegg -- Amazon said 1-2 months! Newegg limits purchase to 2 mini plugs per order, so supply must be tight.
