Amazon Echo Discussion / Re: Echo dot
« Last post by mike27oct on February 20, 2018, 03:27:12 am »
It occurs to me there is a distinction I may be overlooking (others may too); that's the distinction of a snart wall switch (light switch) and a smart plug to control a lamp or light.  Maybe wall switches act differently than smart plugs. I dunno since I only have smart plugs as I have no interest in smart wall switches.  Jeeze, I am not unable to flip on a wall switch since all in my house are at each doorway, but lamps are a little more of a pain since many are within the room or in corners etc., not on ceilings controlled.by wall switch.  Another reason for plugs vs wall switches is cost and time to install.  I also do not have the urge to talk to most everything inanimate in my house.  Sometimes silence is golden. Sometimes home automation gets carried too far, I believe.

Amazon Echo Discussion / Re: Add Echo to Multiple Groups?
« Last post by BrainKing8585 on February 19, 2018, 11:18:43 pm »
But the issue here is not smart home devices, rather multi-room music. I have the identical problem. According to Amazon (on their Alexa help page under multi-room music) it says:
“To stream different music on multiple devices or on MORE THAN ONE MULTI-ROOM MUSIC GROUP AT THE SAME TIME, you must have an Amazon Music Unlimited Family plan.” (the caps are mine for emphasis). So despite having Spotify Premium and Tidal, I’m now forking over for the macdaddy Amazon music plan, and still can’t have an upstairs group, downstairs group, plus an everywhere group that combines the two. Frustrating!
I haven’t tried telling Alexa to play music “upstairs and downstairs”. Awkward, but it may work. (That idea just came to me while typing this post.)

Smart Devices and Gadgets / Re: Broadlink RM2
« Last post by tthoben on February 19, 2018, 09:59:29 pm »
the prblem is when i am going to rm plugin and choose alexa devises , add alexa devise, i make a devise name, and when i choose the on command option, single devise, in the selected devise says that i haven'tconfigure any broadling devise. in rm plugin in devise list don't have the rm pro. how can i make rm plugin to see the rm pro?

In RM Plugin, under DATA, Device List can you see the RM Pro listed? If not, you may need to check your router and WIFI connections.

Your android bridge device (running the RM Plugin), RM Pro and Echo/Dots should all be on the same WIFI band i.e. 2.4Ghz else they may not see each other.

I strongly recommend to go into router settings to set static IP addresses for the bridge device, RM Pro, Echo/Dots so that you have no downstream/future issues after router reboots/power cycles.

Last resort: watch this lengthy YT video to see if you have missed out any step in the configuration. You have been warned it's a long video  ;)

Amazon Echo Discussion / Re: Alexa keeps shuffling spotify playlist
« Last post by silvermullet on February 19, 2018, 09:47:20 pm »
If you're a paid subscriber you can turn off shuffle by clicking on the arrows shown in the photo below.

Green is shuffle and white in no shuffle.

thanks.

yea.. the shuffle was not enabled on my spotify phone app.  thats the kicker.  any playlists initiated from my phone are not shuffled.  if i initiate the playlist with alexa and look on my iphone app, the shuffle is enabled.  spotify is installed on one other computer in my house and looked to see if shuffle was enabled on there and it was not.

the biggest kicker of all is that it returned to normal behavior around 2pm PST.  did nothing except come back from lunch.

anyway, thanks for the reply.

I think your problem is you don't want to think about what room you are in, you just want to tutn on an "Alexa" light switch.  If the wemo there is named Basement.  It's not that much trouble.to say turn on the basement..If it were me, I would turn on basement BEFORE I arrived there.
And I think you problem is you don't want to just flip a light switch. How much work is that?

Eventually in the near future just walking into a room will turn the lights on and when the last person leaves the lights will go out all automatically.
And after that will come fusion and the lights will stay on 24/7 if we want.

You do not need Groups <IF> your wemo devices can have a unique name (as my TP Link plugs can).  The only time you need a Group is when there is more than one wemo used to light a room.  Like is the case in my Living room.  In this situation, I have two plugs and each has a unique name and they are named One Lamp and Two Lamps.  I can turn either on individually, but to turn on both plugs I DO need a Group, and that group is called Living Room that turns on both plugs.

I have another TP link plug for a hallway lamp, and I did not name the plug hallway, but kept the default name of Smart Plug and when I ask ANY Alexa device to turn on Smart Plug the hallway lamp turns on.

That's easy to understand and that's how I have all my lights and plugs configured, along with anybody else that are using Alexa and light controls.

But I just don't see how you can use one phrase and only one phrase(same exact phrase)to turn on the light in whichever room your in. Are you telling me you can say "Alexa turn on the Smart Plug" and it will turn on any ONE of the smart plugs in whichever ONE  room your in(if there is both a smart plug and a Alexa in that room as well as a Alexa and smart plug in every other room)?

To make it more clear. I want to enter living room and say "Alexa turn on the light" and only the living room light comes on.
Then I want to go to basement and say "Alexa turn on the light" and only the basement light comes on.
Then I want to go to garage and say "Alexa turn on the light" and only the garage light comes on.
Plus while still in the basement I still want to be able to say "Alexa turn on the garage light" and the garage light will come on. That's how it is set up now.

"Alexa turn on the lights"

Well, it ain't gonna happen as mentioned above, so get over it.  Move on. Alexa is not like a securuty light with a photo cell.

Yeah... It does mike... If you make a group, name it bedroom, then within that group choose the dot that is in that bedroom as part of the group... When you walk into THAT ROOM and say "Alexa, turn on lights." The dot will oblige. only in that room. with that echo... if you want to use that same echo to control some other things as well, you can use the already common ways to use it to control other things. Such as "Alexa, turn on porch light." or Alexa, turn on Kitchen Lights"... still works, but the echo will recognize that you are closest to it when in that room, and will turn on only the lights in that group when you command "Alexa, turn on lights". As far as I know this only works with lights for now. I haven't any other things to control, but it may actually turn on smart receptacles as well... I have none to check. Could be fine as well.

qUOTE scottrods. The easiest way is to make groups.

Oh sure. You knew it all the time.

I've known it for a few weeks now I guess... I got the info on a Hue Lights FB page... I don't have the screen shots of it, but I have seen them and actually did know how. Otherwise I wouldn't have said "Yes!"... really. Hope you get/got it working.
