Could someone please tell me how I download a audio book, in order for me to listen on my Echo ?   Thanks in advance.

If you buy an audio book on Audible, I guess it'll be automagically available for your Echo to read (and listed in the Music & Books (http://alexa.amazon.com/spa/index.html#music/AUDIBLE) section)
I haven't tried it though...

As Jerome says - subscribe to Audible, then link your Audible account to your Alexa app (via the app - sorry, it's a while since I did this so I'm not sure I have all the steps but it wasn't difficult). Then when you want to hear your book, ask Alexa to open Audible and presto! your book starts up. You can go back a chapter (or forwards - check the Alexa manual on Amazon for the finer detail) and you can set a sleep timer so it will stop reading at some point, hopefully not long after you've nodded off.

there are very few places where you can download audiobooks for free.  most of those sites have older books where the copyright has expired.   I use the following site since it has a lot of the older radio shows too.

https://archive.org/

once you download them, you can upload them to your amazon music account and you can listen to them from there just for the asking
