Got my first one last Thursday and was told it would update over the next 48 hours it didn't so Amazon tech told me to do certain things to update it it wouldn't so they sent me a new one out today so tried to update doing the things Amazon told me the other day and still nothing.

Also tried different broadband provider, got told it might be because I'm with BT no joy, tried using a Android app no joy tried using the Kindle app no joy.

Came on this forum because the official Amazon forums no one can give us a answer and there's a few of us on that forum stuck with the old software

Hm. I know BT can be problematic as regards routers but I don't know if that would impact on the Echo devices. I'm with Plusnet which is BT owned and the equipment is BT I think. Have you checked out your router's firewall to see if it's blocking your device? Is it a BT router? Might be an idea to find their forum see if it's reported as a problem. I've heard that mentioned before here for similar reasons. Meanwhile, new software landed - 608490620 - on my Echo Show last night. Or rather at 1 a.m. which woke the thing up from Do Not Disturb, lit it up, and woke me up too. Not best pleased! The others are still at 601.

Just checked my devices and found a mixture of software versions:
Dot: 601481020
Echo 1st gen: 601478420
Spot: 601481220
It would be useful to have a download/install option when new software is released, rather than this happening in the middle of the night. Release notes for new software visible on the device would be good too.

Doing some internet search keep reading it's not possible to actually force an update if your Echo as not been chosen to recieve the update yet because it's launched in batches....weird thing is on the first one, Amazon said the Echo was up to date and there wasn't an update for my unit even though it was on 599473720.

On another forum someones on his 4th plenty of people with 2 no joy, puzzled what to do, want to stay with the Echo but if it never updates what will the future hold for mine..

What's the timescale for this? How long have you had the unit and been waiting for the update? It's right that these are released in batches - as I said, one of mine updated last night but the others haven't yet. Same house, same generation set (I have two Shows, one updated the other hasn't), same everything else. Could be yours needs to cycle through the intervening updates so it's all straight for the latest. Meanwhile, can you get radio stations, stream music via Spotify or Amazon for instance? That might indicate whether or not your router is blocking access to Alexa's wider world.

Yeah no problem with the both units only got them last week and this week , both streaming music, playing games etc wouldn't have know any difference, it was only when friends told me theirs updated straight away I looked and was concerned about been a software version behind. I'm wondering if the 601481020 is no longer released due to the imminent release of the newer update.

Can't be sure but I think they're incremental so you need previous versions to form a platform for the subsequent ones. Good news is your router seems happy enough and, as this is a recent purchase, I'd be inclined to give it time now to catch up. Bit like a box set - last episode won't make sense without the previous ones :) If it hasn't updated at all in a week/two weeks, then you might need to raise it as an issue. That's what I'd do anyway.

Yeah agree with you using both units to stream everywhere so no problems.Maybe me constantly unpluging and dergistering doesn't help it catch up.....

Wouldn't it just! Never happened before, hope it doesn't happen again!

That could be true. Hold your horses and give it a chance to get its luggage off the carousel :)

The official word from Amazon to get an update is to press the Mic button so that the top ring is red. Leave it that way for a few hours and the update should come through.

The reason is simple. The Echo assumes it is in use if you are speaking to it or if there are other noises or sounds near by, whether it's from a TV, radio, neighbors, pets, traffic noise, loud refrigerator/appliances, etc. After all, the Echo is constantly listening for its wake word. If you mute the Mic, it will hear nothing so it will assume that it is not in use. When it is not in use, that is when it will go out and fetch updates.
